WHAT CAN WE EAT?
The cuisine
of Toronto
reflects Toronto's size and multicultural diversity. Different ethnic
neighbourhoods throughout the city focus on specific cuisines, such as authentic
Chinese and Vietnamese found in the city's six Chinatowns, Korean
in Koreatown, Greek
on The Danforth, Italian
cuisine in Little Italy and Corso Italia, and Indian
in Little India. Numerous other world
cuisines are available throughout the city, including Portuguese, Hungarian, Japanese,
and Caribbean. In addition to ethnic cuisines,
Toronto is also home to many fine dining establishments and chain restaurants
ranging from fast food to casual or upscale dining.
Perhaps
one of the most iconic and distinct Toronto offerings, although one that is not
widely known, is the peameal bacon sandwich, normally on
a Kaiser. The most famous offerings of the sandwich are Paddington's Pump,
Sausage King, and Carousel Bakery; coincidentally enough, all are located at St. Lawrence Market.
Peameal
bacon
Peameal
bacon (also known as cornmeal
bacon) is a type of bacon originating in Canada. The
name reflects the historic practice of rolling the cured and trimmed boneless
loin in dried and ground yellow peas, originally for preservation reasons. Peameal bacon is
made from boneless pork loins, short cut from the leaner portions of the loin,
to ensure a more uniform product.
THE WEATHER
Toronto's climate is moderate for
Canada owing to its southerly location within the country. It has a humid continental climate, with warm,
humid summers and cold winters. The city experiences four distinct seasons,
with considerable variance in day to day temperature, particularly during the
colder weather season.
Toronto winters sometimes feature
short cold snaps where maximum temperatures remain below −10 °C, often made to
feel colder by wind chill. Snowstorms, sometimes mixed with
ice and rain can disrupt work and travel schedules, accumulating snow can fall
any time from November until mid-April. However, mild stretches with
temperatures in the 5 to 12 °C range and infrequently higher also occur in most
winters melting accumulated snow. Summer in Toronto is characterized by long
stretches of humid weather. Usually in the range from 23 °C to 31 °C, daytime
temperatures occasionally surpass 35 °C accompanied by high humidity making it
feel oppressive during these brief periods of hot weather. Spring and autumn
are transitional seasons with generally mild or cool temperatures with
alternating dry and wet periods.
Precipitation is fairly evenly
distributed throughout the year, but summer is usually the wettest season, the
bulk falling during thunderstorms. There can be periods of dry weather, but
drought-like conditions are rare. The average yearly precipitation is about 830
mm, with an average annual snowfall of about 133 cm. Toronto experiences an
average of 2,038 sunshine hours, or 44% of daylight hours, varying between a
low of 27% in December to 59% in July.
MUSIC "CELINE DION"
Céline
Marie Claudette Dion, (born
March 30, 1968), is a Canadian singer. Born to a large family from Charlemagne, Quebec, Dion emerged as a teen
star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband René Angélil
mortgaged his home to finance her first record. In 1990, she released the
English-language album Unison, establishing herself as a
viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the
world.
Dion
had first gained international recognition in the 1980s by winning both the
1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. Following a
series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to CBS Records
Canada in 1986. During the 1990s, with the help of Angélil, she
achieved worldwide fame after signing with Epic Records
and releasing several English albums along with additional French albums,
becoming one of the most successful artists in pop music history.
Dion's
music has been influenced by genres ranging from rock and R&B
to gospel
and classical. While her releases have often
received mixed critical reception, she is renowned for her technically skilled
and powerful vocals. Dion is the best-selling Canadian artist of all time, is
the second best-selling female artist in the US during the Nielsen
SoundScan era, and is the only female artist to have two singles
sell more than a million copies in the UK. According to Sony Music Entertainment, Dion has sold
over 200 million albums worldwide.
